More evidence is mounting that Ford may be preparing new body styles for the Mustang lineup.
Citing four people in attendance at a recent Ford dealer meet in Las Vegas, Automotive News (subscription required) reported on Thursday that Ford showed several new models at the event as renderings and mockups.
Among the new models allegedly shown were a four-door coupe and four-wheel-drive off-roader forming part of an expanded Mustang lineup.
The four-door coupe was referred to as the Mach 4 by some of the sources. The off-roader was described as having raised suspension and special tires, presumably to handle rough terrain. Neither model was described as an electric vehicle.
2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally
Ford has already trod down the off-road path with the Mustang Mach-E Rally launched for the 2024 model year. A similar model based on the Mustang coupe could be launched as a more attainable alternative to off-road-ready sports cars like the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato.
Also shown at the dealer meet, according to the sources, were a Mustang RTR equipped with the Mustang's 2.3-liter turbo-4 and targeted for sale at around $40,000, and a high-performance Mustang convertible with a V-8 and manual transmission.
No timeline for the launch of any of the models was given, according to the sources, meaning production isn't a sure bet. However, Ford's top brass has hinted in the recent past at expanding the Mustang lineup. CEO Jim Farley in a May intereview with Autocar mentioned additional body styles for the Mustang were possible, like a four-door that isn't an SUV.
Farley also said earlier this year that he plans to keep the V-8 alive in the Mustang for as long as possible. He also said Ford is looking at adding hybrid technology across the lineup, meaning a previously planned gas-electric Mustang may be back on the table.
