• Adrian Newey has joined the Aston Martin F1 team, both as a designer and shareholder
  • Newey's first design for the team will be its 2026 F1 car
  • The car will be the first to use a newly developed Honda power unit

Adrian Newey has landed after leaving Red Bull Racing.

On Tuesday, Aston Martin confirmed the hugely successful race car designer will join its Formula 1 team as managing technical partner, starting March 1, 2025. Newey will also become a shareholder in the team itself.

Aston Martin said Newey will lead the development of its new 2026 F1 race car. Aston Martin will switch from Mercedes-Benz AMG to Honda power units for the upcoming 2026 race car—a familiar setup for Newey, as today's Red Bull F1 cars also use Honda power units, though Red Bull will be moving to its own power units developed with Ford by the time the 2026 season rolls around, when next-generation power unit rules will be introduced.

The deal between Newey and Aston Martin is said to be the beginning of a "milestone long-term partnership," but no firm timelines were given.

In April, the Aston Martin F1 team announced it had signed Fernando Alonso for a new multi-year deal. The announcement ended speculation as to whether Alonso might retire from F1 again.  No comment has been made as to Alonso's current teammate at Aston Martin, Lance Stroll, who is the son of the team's chairman, Lawrence Stroll.

Red Bull Racing announced Newey's departure from the team in May. Serving as chief technical officer in his final role, Newey had been with Red Bull Racing since 2006, helping the energy drink manufacturer earn six Constructors' titles and seven Drivers' titles. Newey has confirmed he will be with Red Bull Racing for the remainder of this season and for the debut of the RB17 track-only hypercar, which he designed.

Newey has previously worked with Aston Martin, though not in F1. Newey designed Aston Martin's Valkyrie hypercar, back when Aston Martin was a sponsor of the Red Bull F1 team, and with any luck he will also design a successor to that model.

In a statement, Newey said he looks forward to making Aston Martin a world championship-winning team.
