• Rimac is building a single-seat track car, and it might not be electric
  • The car will have a closed cockpit and not be related to the Nevera
  • Prices and availability have not been confirmed

Last week Rimac unveiled the Nevera R, a hardcore version of the Nevera electric hypercar with even more power and modifications aimed at improving lap times.

The company's chief has already announced plans for an even quicker car.

Speaking to Motor1 during Friday's reveal of the Nevera R, Rimac CEO and founder Mate Rimac said the company is developing a track-only car that will outpace race cars currently competing in Formula 1 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“We are building a track car, a single-seater that's going to be faster than any race car for most tracks,” he said. “Faster than Formula 1, faster than Le Mans."

He described the car as having a closed cockpit and a platform unrelated to the one in the Nevera. He also said the reveal will probably happen as soon as this year and that next year the company plans to set some records.

He didn't mention whether the car will be an electric vehicle, and there's a chance it might not be. Although Rimac is known for its EV technology, its CEO in May said customers of high-performance cars still want the emotion that an internal-combustion engine can deliver and that Rimac cars don't have to be exclusively electric. He said Rimac is all about pushing the technological envelope and that this could include alternative fuel types like natural gas and hydrogen.

Details on availability and prices weren't mentioned.

The new Rimac isn't the only track car looking to outpace the world's top race cars. Leading F1 team Red Bull Racing is also working on a track car, albeit one with two seats. Red Bull's car is known as the RB17, and it's confirmed by the company to be coming with a naturally aspirated V-10 mated with a mild-hybrid system for a combined output of 1,200 hp. It will be among the last designs from Adrian Newey, at least for Red Bull, as the star aerodynamicist is set to quit the squad in early 2025.
