To promote its efforts in this year's Global Rallycross Championship (GRC), Subaru took to the concrete canyons of New York City to unveil its latest rally machine. The Japanese automaker unveiled a rally-spec 2015 WRX STI at the 2014 New York Auto Show as a preview of the actual race car it will campaign in the GRC this fall. It won't be ready for the May 18 start of the 2014 season.
When it does arrive, though, the Rallycross Subaru will be hard to miss. Instead of Subaru's traditional rally blue, the car wears a light blue and gray color scheme with white splotches. It's also got a wide-body kit, bigger carbon-fiber rear spoiler, roof scoop and Method race wheels mounted on the GRC's spec Yokohama tires. Longtime Subaru collaborator Vermont SportsCar built the show car.
Subaru will campaign two 2015 WRX STI Rallycross racers, driven by Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen. Subaru Rally Team USA drivers Travis Pastrana and David Higgins will get their own 2015 WRX STI racers for the Rally America series later this year as well.
Rallycross differs from conventional series like Rally America because it takes place on short courses, rather than stages. The format brings a bit of motocross to the racing, and creates plenty of action for spectators.
