Following Lexus’ lead, Volkswagen has previewed its complete 60-second spot that will air during the second quarter of the Big Game, Super Bowl XLVI, this Sunday, February 5.
VW has actually released an extended version of the ad, which continues the Star Wars theme made popular last year, but with a twist.
The new ad is labeled “The Dog Strikes Back” and features the story of a dog named Bolt who is inspired to whip himself into shape by the 2012 VW Beetle.
The twist comes at the end, where we’re suddenly taken to the iconic Cantina introduced in Star Wars Episode IV, filled with characters from the movie--including a full-sized Darth Vader--arguing over which ad is best.
This is the third consecutive year that Volkswagen has advertised at the Super Bowl, and this time around the automaker has spared no expensive. Its campaign this year also included a teaser distributed in mid-January, entitled “The Bark Side,” featuring a choir of dogs barking along to Star Wars’ Imperial March music.
Some of the other automakers gearing up for the Super Bowl this year are Acura, Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, and Suzuki. You can view all of the competing ads by clicking here.
