The letters VVEL are important to the architecture of Nissan engines. Those four letters stand for Variable Valve Event and Lift. What that refers to is a Nissan engine that operates without the use of a throttle body. Instead, the air flowing into the engine is metered by way of the cams and valves. It's a pretty trick system, and due to its complexity we're going to need some help from Engineering Explained host Jason Fenske to explain it all. Gidi Chamdi rips off new Nissan GT-R quarter mile record
You know the name AMS Performance. It's the tuning company turning out insanely powerful and wickedly quick Nissan GT-Rs. You also probably know the name Gidi Chamdi, as we wrote about him and his Lamborghini Gallardo when he used it to hit 240.64 mph in a half-mile airstrip run, securing himself...

e-Power: Nissan’s new series hybrid powertrain
Nissan is one of the biggest proponents of electric cars but even it concedes that not everyone is ready to make the switch. That’s why the automaker is introducing series hybrid powertrains to bridge the gap between internal combustion cars and electrics. Nissan is using the name e-Power for...

Circa-1990 Nissan Sentra to finally cease production in Mexico
While Nissan in the United States is busy promoting its new turbocharged Sentra SR, the company's counterparts down in Mexico are marking the end of an era: the Nissan Tsuru, which was sold here as the Sentra in the early 1990s, is finally going out of production. With more than 1.8 million built...

Nissan on Thursday announced the successful acquisition of a 34 percent stake in fellow Japanese automaker Mitsubishi. The deal, valued at 237 billion yen (approximately $2.28 billion), was first announced in May following the emergence of Mitsubishi’s own emissions cheating scandal, which mainly affected the Japanese market. Nissan is now the largest shareholder of Mitsubishi and has a controlling stake in the automaker. And Nissan’s Chairman and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, is also serving as Chairman of Mitsubishi. The acquisition means the Renault Nissan alliance is on track to be among...

2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo first drive review
Faulkner famously told us the past isn't dead; it isn't even past. We can't prove it, but we think he had the Nissan Sentra SE-R in mind. The 1991-1994 SE-R set the cheap-car benchmark for a generation: a flyweight car with feathery controls and a lamprey lock on the pavement. Think ersatz M3 with...

Nissan’s Rogue has been huge hit for the automaker. Buyers in the United States snapped up 287,190 examples last year, making the compact SUV the second most popular model after the Altima in Nissan’s fleet, and this year’s tally is on track to be even higher. The roomier, more...

2017 Nissan Sentra SR Turbo pumps out 188 hp, thanks to the Juke
It's been forever since the Nissan Sentra SE-R was a machine to be feared--but this year, a new Sentra SR Turbo gives us hope that its tossable, rev-happy spirit lives on. The 2017 Sentra SR Turbo gets its start as a stock Sentra SR, complete with its 124-hp, naturally aspirated inline-4. Yank that...

Nissan has priced its 2017 Armada from a very reasonable $45,395, including destination. That’s a rise on the starting price of the previous Armada, which in its last year on the market listed from a little under $40k, but the new Armada is a much more substantial vehicle. Its pricing also represents a discount compared to rival full-size, body-on-frame SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] Expedition and Toyota Land Cruiser, the latter of which starts above $80k. 2018 Nissan NP300 Navara-based SUV spy shots
Those lamenting Nissan’s decision to go with car-like unibody construction for the latest Pathfinder will be happy to note the automaker is working on a new body-on-frame SUV, though whether we see it in the United States remains to be seen. The vehicle is an SUV version of Nissan’s...

Yes, this Nissan GT-R has turbos for headlights
Nissan’s GT-R is one of the most popular cars for modifying, and with good reason. But there’s such a thing as taking things too far. Case in point is this GT-R with turbochargers where the headlights would normally sit. Yes, it makes the car look downright nasty, in a good way, but it...

Nissan’s fourth-generation Pathfinder has received some updates for the 2017 model year. The updates are significant and give the vehicle a fresh new look as well as more power and a host of extra safety gear. The most exciting of these updates is the new V-6. It still displaces 3.5 liters...

How the Nissan GT-R's all-wheel-drive system works
There are few cars more complex and sophisticated than Godzilla, also known as the Nissan GT-R. Our friend at Engineering Explained, Jason Fenske, has a knack for making the most complicated topics far easier to understand, and his latest project is dissecting just how the GT-R puts its 565...

Nissan is in the car business, but it has commissioned a special drone that is capable of keeping pace with the high-performance GT-R on a racetrack. The GT-R Drone, as Nissan is calling it, was designed by World Drone Prix Champions. Its most impressive spec is that it can reach 62 mph from a complete stop in just 1.3 seconds. That performance, which Tesla would probably call beyond ludicrous speed, is made possible by four propellers, each powered by a 2000 kV XNova motor. Holding it all together is a Sky-Hero quadracopter frame designed specifically for drone racing. While the GT-R tops...

Nissan's short-lived IDx concept to appear in 'Fast 8'
The compact, rear-wheel drive show car we got so excited about at the Nissan stand a few years ago is back, but it isn't headed to dealers. Instead, as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson pointed out in a post on his Instagram channel, the IDx NISMO show car will apparently play a role in the upcoming eighth...

2017 Nissan 370Z preview
Walk up to the counter, tell the Nissan dealer the trim model of the 2017 Nissan 370Z you want, take two steps to the left, hand the cashier your money, take your keys and go home. Nissan has announced the 370Z will live on for at least another year—the ninth for the current model (a Z34 to...

Nissan proposes ethanol for future fuel cell cars, to avoid hydrogen fueling
Electric cars are showing up all over the place, but hydrogen fuel-cell cars have lagged behind, with only three Asian makers committed to offering them in the U.S. That's partly because setting up a network of hydrogen stations to fuel them is slow and expensive. Now Nissan has a better idea...

Nissan GT-R blows rear end then returns to drag strip
Heavily modified high-horsepower drag cars put a lot of abuse and strain on their parts. There's so much energy going through many components that it's not unusual for something to give up and call it quits. That's what happened to the rear end on a Nissan GT-R packing a reported 2,000 horsepower...

2017 Nissan GT-R first drive review
I’ve just snaked through legendary Eau Rouge and Raidillon S-turns at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, careful not to drive over the rumble strips because, in the rain, their paint has a different traction coefficient than the asphalt and that could send the 565-horsepower 2017 Nissan GT-R off...
