The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday started an auction on its loan made out to struggling electric car startup Fisker Automotive back in 2010. The DOE is still owed $168 million from the $192 million loan, which was originally awarded to Fisker under the government’s advanced-technology vehicle manufacturing program, though any sale is expected to be at a discount. The DOE said it planned the auction after "exhausting any realistic possibility" that Fisker could repay the loan. Students from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have smashed the electric car world record for the 0-60 mph run using a car built themselves. Their time, using the DUT13 electric car pictured above, was a blistering 2.15 seconds. The time is for acceleration to 100 kmh (62 mph). The previous record stood at 2.68 seconds. As Wired points out, the students even managed to beat the fastest 0-60 mph time for a production car: 2.3 seconds, clocked by a 500-horsepower Ariel Atom V8 back in 2010. “We thought that under these conditions we’d be happy with 2.30,”...

The Tesla Model S is an undeniably quick car, especially considering its considerable weight. But just how much power does the world's only real electric car produce? A lot, it turns out. The team at Autocar took the Model S to the dyno to find out exactly how much power reaches the rear wheels. With a Tesla [NSDQ:TSLA] Model S Performance edition (with the + suspension package) strapped down and the roller spun up, the results are staggering: 428.2 horsepower at the wheels.
