• Camper van conversions are in the works for the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, but not from VW
  • Conversions will start at $7,995
  • Deliveries are said to begin in November

Volkswagen may be holding off on introducing a California-style ID.Buzz built for camping regulars, due to what the automaker perceives as low demand, but America's Peace Vans has stepped up to the challenge.

The Seattle company, which specializes in restoring and modifying the VW Microbus, including offering its own EV conversion for the van icon, has announced a number of upfit options for the latest ID.Buzz, the Microbus' spiritual successor. The ID.Buzz only reaches dealerships later this year but Peace Vans is accepting reservations on some of its offerings.

The company has three basic packages: Box, Sleeper, and Camper. The Box is designed for daytrips and would also prove ideal for tailgating, as it basically consists of an in-built kitchen that replaces the ID.Buzz's third-row seats. Customers looking for a van they can sleep in will need to opt for the Sleeper or Camper options.

The Sleeper adds a fold-out bed to the Box's kitchen, while the Camper adds a kitchen together with a lounge that can transform into a bed. The Camper requires two rows of seats to be removed, though, leaving the ID.Buzz as a strict two-seater.

Pricing for the packages start at $7,995 and vary based on what options are selected. For the occasional camping excursion, Peace Vans also has custom vans available for rent, though right now the ID.Buzz isn't part of the fleet.

Pricing information for the ID.Buzz hasn't been announced, though the base price is expected to start around $65,000. All models will pack a 91-kwh battery that's expected to deliver a range of about 260 miles, and buyers will be able to choose between a single-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain rated at 282 hp and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain rated at 335 hp.

Peace Vans said it will be able to source an ID.Buzz for conversion or the customer can bring in their own vehicle.
