Hyundai’s new luxury brand Genesis is launching its second model in the form of the G80 sedan.
The G80 isn’t a completely new model as it is essentially a rebadged version of the second-generation Hyundai Genesis, which has been on sale since the 2015 model year.
It’s now serving as the mid-size entry at Genesis, as opposed to Hyundai. It joins Genesis’ full-size entry, the G90, which was launched at the start of the year. Both the G80 and G90 arrive as 2017 models.
2017 Genesis G80
For the United States, the G80 will be offered with two powertrain options initially. They’re the familiar 3.8-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 options offered in the Hyundai Genesis.
The V-6 delivers 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque while the V-8 delivers 420 hp and 383 lb-ft. Both engines come standard with an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Buyers of the V-6 can opt for all-wheel drive, though.
Sadly, there’s no mention of the G80 Sport present at the G80’s Korean debut a month ago. This model is fitted with a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 good for about 365 hp. It’s likely to be added to the local lineup at a later date.
Apart from a few badges, it’s hard to spot the differences between the G80 and its Hyundai Genesis predecessor. The only noticeable differences are some tweaks to the lights.
The same is true for the interior which maintains an uncluttered albeit somewhat simple look. It’s spacious and the simplified switchgear and instrument panel make it a breeze to operate the various controls. Total storage space is around 15.3 cubic feet.
2017 Genesis G80
The G80 is based on a rigid rear-wheel-drive platform and features high-strength steel throughout. Multi-link suspension is featured at both ends and was honed on the Nürburgring. The car also features electronic power steering and a drive modes selector to allow the driver to select the level of performance.
The G80 benefits from a long list of standard equipment, including both convenience and safety features. The list includes front seats with electronic adjustment and heating functions; an 8.0-inch touchscreen display with navigation and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; and parking sensors. Standard safety includes automatic emergency braking; lane keep assist; blind spot detection; and a rearview camera.
Pricing for the 2017 G80 starts at $42,350, including a $950 destination charge. The 2016 Hyundai Genesis was priced from just under $39k and competed with the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The G80 will have to go up against these plus some newer rivals such as the Lincoln Continental and Volvo S90.
