Mecum’s mega auction that ran in Kissimmee, Florida this month came to an end on Sunday and during the 10 days of furious bidding we saw total sales come close to $93 million. There was everything from pre-war cars to classic muscle to the latest supercars. The real highlight, though, was a pair of Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertibles—yes, there were actually two of them in the same place, and both were up for sale no less.
The convertible E-body Barracudas built by Plymouth for 1970 and ’71 and equipped with the legendary 426 Hemi engine are considered blue chips of the muscle car world, namely due to their limited numbers and Chrysler's decision after '71 to stop using the 426 Hemi in road cars. There desirability proved strong yet again with both examples selling for more than $2 million apiece at the auction.
The yellow example, a 1970 model, sold for $2,675,000. It was the highest grossing vehicle at the auction. Coming as no surprise, the white 1971 example was the second highest grossing vehicle, with its final bid coming in at $2,300,000.
Another star of the auction was a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona barn find, though this one fizzled out in the end. The car was found in a very poor state but given its rarity and numbers matching quality was still expected to fetch between $150,000 and $180,000. The final bid came in at just $90,000.
