This week at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] confirmed plans to launch four all-new SUVs over the coming years to cater to strong demand for high-riding models—and one of them will be a Lincoln. With SUVs now outselling sedans in the United States, the move makes sense for Ford.
We’re not just talking redesigns of existing models. Speaking with USA Today, Ford product chief Raj Nair said the four SUVs will be new additions to the lineup.
Ford wasn’t willing to comment on the identity of any of the SUVs but we already have a few clues.

For the Ford brand, expect to see the subcompact EcoSport added, perhaps in next-generation form. Another is likely to be a new Bronco to take on the likes of the Jeep Wrangler. This one will be twinned with a mid-size Ranger pickup, with both vehicles to start production at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant beginning in 2018.
The identity of the third Ford-branded SUV isn’t clear but we do have an idea of what the Lincoln model might be. There have been rumblings that Lincoln is set to receive a large SUV with third-row seats based on a new multi-billion-dollar platform code named the D6. This SUV is expected to replace the ungainly MKT and be targeted at buyers looking for a more car-like model as opposed to the truck-based Navigator. The Aviator name has been rumored.
