Whatever you think of the cars, Volkswagen and its advertising agencies have always produced some pretty slick adverts. Whether it's a self-deprecating print ad for the Volkswagen Beetle back in the '60s or 2011's The Force, VW knows how to make a good advert.

This year, as it's done for several years now, VW will promote its wares during the Super Bowl, and the automaker has now released a one-minute teaser of its Big Game ad in the shape of Algorithm. Trading on the slightly nerdy nature of its detail-obsessed engineers, Algorithm imagines what a game day advert would be like if the company's engineering department handled its advertising. Using calculations of popular themes, the advert tries to cram in advertising clichés, from kittens and monkeys to dinosaurs, bikini-clad models and Carmen Electra.

Unfortunately for VW's boffins, the rigid technical approach to advertising doesn't really work--and things quickly go wrong. And following the success of previous VW ads like The Force, Get Happy and Bolt, we're not surprised the caricatured engineers looked a little embarrassed. Not to worry though--we're sure they'll be handing the reins back to VW's proper advertising team for the Super Bowl itself...

Super Bowl XLVIII, the 48th running of the event, takes place February 2, 2014 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
