April Fool’s Day may have been four months ago but today we have a story worthy of being a great prank, only it’s real. Mercedes-Benz has enlisted none other than MacGyver, played by actor Richard Dean Anderson, to help sell its latest commercial vehicle, the Citan van.
Anyone familiar with the popular television series MacGyver of the 1980s and early ‘90s will know Anderson’s character can handle virtually any problem, especially if he has his trademark Swiss Army knife with him or perhaps just a paperclip and some duct tape. However, how he’ll apply his skills to selling vans remains to be seen.
In his latest role, MacGyver has come out of retirement, though instead of returning to life as a secret agent for the U.S. government he will be going it alone as a handyman. He will feature in three new episodes of a web series that will commence on September 18 following the debut of the Mercedes-Benz Citan van at a commercial vehicle tradeshow in Germany a few days prior.
Mercedes is keen to point out that MacGyver, or anyone else with a Citan, can rest easy knowing they have a reliable and very versatile compact van at their disposal. The vehicle is based on the Kangoo van built by Mercedes’ alliance partner Renault-Nissan and isn’t due for a U.S. launch anytime soon.
