If you're salivating over a limited-edition luxury performance vehicle easily capable of triple-digit speeds, four-second zero-to-60 times, hand-made engines, and serialized production—the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG or Aston Martin DB9—insurance premiums could prompt you to think again about signing on the dotted line.
But would you care? Chances are, if you can afford one of these vehicles, you probably aren't concerned with the premiums.
Insure.com just investigated, finding average rates for 2011 models, and the list of most expensive vehicles to insure looks like a shortlist for those who bathe in new money—it's populated by the flashiest sheetmetal, largest-displacement engines, and some of the rarest vehicles from major manufacturers.
Five of the top ten vehicles with the highest premiums were powered by V-12 engines, with four others boasting V-8 power.
And if these vehicles aren't among the most expensive for attracting risky drivers—the opposite of the minivans that dominate the lowest-cost vehicles to insure—they're likely among the most expensive to fix, even in a minor fender-bender.
The data is from a study conducted by Quadrant Information Services, for Insure.com. Quadrant calculated the average premiums for single 40-year-old male driver, with relatively common policy limits, a 12-mile commute, clean driving record, and good credit. Insurance quotes were gathers from six major carriers, in ten zip codes per state.
Insure.com notes that average/general rates weren't available for rare sports cars or ultraluxury vehicles, such as Lamborghini models (they're insured by smaller specialty companies, most often), so they've been omitted from this list.
