Camaro Motorsports Camaro with Mika Salo
The Camaro, and especially its SS variant, has been the breakout success--in terms of sales, at least--in the lastest round of the muscle car wars. But that doesn't mean it can't be improved upon, and as Mika Salo demonstrates at the wheel of his new custom supercharged SS, that means more fun.
When you think muscle cars or custom Camaros, you probably don't immediately think of Europe, but maybe you should--the 600-horsepower supercharged beastie in the video below was done by Camaro Motorsport out of Amsterdam. The package mates a supercharger to the 6.2-liter V-8 engine of the SS for 600 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque.
If that recipe sounds a lot like GM's own method for wringing more out of its LS-type V-8s, that's because it is. Hey, it turns out Netherlanders must have an equivalent to the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." And this car ain't broke. Salo also talks about what a great bargain the standard Camaro SS is, considering its performance at its price in the marketplace--even at European prices.
The video really says all that needs saying, and of course you can't get this particular version of the supercharged 'Maro over here, but Hennessey offers its raucous and ready HPE550 and HPE700 to fill the void. There's even been the off-again, on-again rumor of the Camaro Z28 with a CTS-V-like 6.2-liter LSA supercharged V-8 under the hood.
Anyway, ex-Formula 1 driver Mika Salo and 600 wild horses are anxious to drag you into some fun. Enjoy.
