• Ford is close to revealing an updated Expedition
  • A teaser photo reveals a new front end design
  • Spy shots suggest a rugged Expedition Tremor model will be introduced

Ford gave its F-150 an update for the 2024 model year, and now the pickup truck's Expedition SUV counterpart is about to go under the knife.

The current Expedition arrived in 2017 as a 2018 model, and was given its first update for the 2022 model year. The upcoming second update will be introduced for the 2025 model year. The Expedition's plusher sibling, the Lincoln Navigator, has already been updated for 2025.

Camouflaged prototypes for the updated Expedition have been testing on public roads for more than a year, and Ford on Thursday confirmed the debut will happen on Oct. 3. The automaker also dropped a teaser photo along with the confirmation on the reveal date.

The teaser reveals a new front-end design with a wide grille and surrounding light strip that encloses the headlights and connects with the daytime running lights. The blocky headlights of the current Expedition will also be replaced by a thinner set with the update.

The prototype in our spy shots also suggests Ford plans a rugged Expedition Tremor model with this update. Ford added a Timberline model to the Expedition lineup for 2022, boasting off-road features such as steel skid plates, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires, and unique chassis mods including an extra 0.9 inch of extra ground clearance.

However, the prototype shown here wears more serious 33-inch General Grabber All-Terrain tires, the same tires used on the F-150 Tremor. The 18-inch wheel design on the prototype is also the same found on the F-150 off-roader.

There are rumors Ford may also add the hybrid powertrain that the F-150 received with its 2021 redesign. The setup pairs a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with an electric motor integrated with the standard 10-speed automatic transmission. It's good for a combined 430 hp.

Currently, the Expedition is offered solely with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 380 hp as standard or 400 hp in top-end models like the King Ranch and Platinum.
