Electric cars are increasingly becoming synonymous with performance, a point best illustrated by Genovation Cars' new record-setting Corvette-based Genovation eXtreme Electric.
At a test conducted, fittingly, at NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, the GXE accelerated (rather quietly, we might add) to a top speed of 186.8 mph after one mile. Given a little more space, Genovation says the car will top 200 mph.
Certified by the International Mile Racing Association, the run bests a 177 mph sprint achieved last year in Texas by an electrified 1968 Ford Mustang. The GXE was piloted by Johnny Bohmer, who set a record for gas-powered road-going cars a few years back when he pushed a modified Ford GT to 283 mph.

Genovation says that those so inclined can purchase their own Corvette-based GXE for $330,000, or $290,000 if they supply their own Corvette. The 'Vette used in the record-setting sprint was based on a 2006 Z06, minus, of course, its big, factory-supplied V-8 engine.
In its place is an electric motor that Genovation says produces 700 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. With a claimed 130-mile range in more sedate driving, the GXE is a Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA]-fighting supercar in its own right.
